Privacy Policy

OpenlyChess is a chess opening trainer. This page explains exactly what we store, why we store it, and how you can have it removed. We do not sell personal data.

What we store

  • Training progress.Which positions you have practised, your accuracy and your streak. For visitors without an account this stays in your browser's local storage and never reaches our servers. With an account it is linked to your account so you can continue on another device.
  • Email address. Only if you choose to sign in. We use it to send a one-time sign-in link and nothing else. We do not send marketing email.
  • Chess platform usernames. If you connect Lichess or Chess.com, we store the username you entered and read your publicly available recent games in order to recommend openings. We never ask for your password on those platforms.
  • Usage analytics. Aggregated page views and feature usage, so we know which parts of the trainer help and which do not.

What we do not store

  • Passwords — sign-in works through a one-time link, so there is none to store.
  • Payment details.
  • The content of your games beyond what is needed to identify openings.

Third-party services

We rely on a small number of providers to run the service: hosting and delivery, authentication and transactional email, analytics, and the public Lichess and Chess.com APIs. Each receives only the data required for its function.

Cookies and local storage

We use local storage to keep your training progress and preferences, and cookies to keep you signed in and to measure aggregate usage. Clearing your browser storage removes local progress that has not been linked to an account.

Your choices

You can request a copy of your data or its deletion at any time by writing to support@openlychess.com. If you never signed in, clearing your browser storage already deletes everything we hold about you.

Children

The service is suitable for all ages, but we do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13 beyond the training progress kept in their browser.

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that affects what we collect, we will update the date at the top of this page.
