Terms of Service

Last updated 26 July 2026

These terms apply when you use OpenlyChess. By using the service you accept them. If you do not, please do not use the service.

The service

OpenlyChess is a web application for learning and practising chess openings. The core trainer is free to use and does not require an account. Some features may require signing in, and paid features may be introduced later — if that happens, the price and what it covers will be stated clearly before any payment.

Your account

Signing in works through a one-time link sent to your email address. Keep access to that mailbox secure, since anyone who can read it can sign in as you. You are responsible for the activity that happens under your account.

Acceptable use

  • Do not attempt to disrupt, overload or break into the service.
  • Do not scrape or bulk-download the training content for redistribution.
  • Do not use the service to break the law or infringe anyone's rights.

Content and intellectual property

Chess moves, openings and their names are common knowledge and belong to nobody. The explanations, lesson structure, design and code of OpenlyChess are ours, and you may not republish them as your own product. You are of course free to use everything you learn here in your own games.

Third-party platforms

If you connect a Lichess or Chess.com account, we read publicly available data through their APIs. We are not affiliated with either platform, and their own terms apply to your use of them.

Availability and changes

We aim to keep the service running and improving, but we cannot promise it will always be available or bug-free. Features may change, and we may suspend access that threatens the stability or security of the service.

No warranty

The service is provided as is. Training with it should improve your openings, but we make no guarantee about your results or rating.

Liability

To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses arising from use of the service.
